Event requirements

Please read this carefully!

To be considered for acceptance into the MSF2 Instructor/Coach candidate class, applicants must meet the following prerequisites:

  • A minimum of 50 completed track days across a variety of tracks
  • Current participation in the advanced run group (or equivalent top-level/solo group)
  • A referral from a Head Coach or Chief Instructor at a recognized national HPDE organization (e.g., PCA, NASA, Chin, BMW CCA, etc.)
  • Approval from Hooked On Driving Northeast Track Days Chief Instructor(s)
  • Completion of MSF Level 1 online

Vehicle requirement You must bring a track-worthy vehicle equipped with a passenger seat that has restraints equal to those in the driver’s seat. A street-legal sedan or coupe is typically the best choice, as mentors will drive your vehicle while simulating typical HPDE students. Note: You will most likely not be able to drive on Saturday. If you successfully complete the class and earn full MSF2 certification, you may have the opportunity to drive on Sunday in our Mega Course HPDE session, where you would be assigned a student for the day. If you do not successfully complete the class, you will remain eligible to drive on Sunday.

Application process You will be asked to submit a track driving resume highlighting your experience, including:

  • Total track days and tracks attended
  • Run groups participated in
  • Any prior instructing, mentoring, or coaching roles
  • Certifications (including MSF Level 1 if completed)
  • Relevant competitive or organizational involvement

This resume allows us to evaluate your qualifications and process your application.

Possible outcomes of the MSF2 Instructor/Coach class If approved to attend, there are three possible results:

  1. Full MSF2 Certification You perform exceptionally well, meet all evaluation criteria, and receive full endorsement. You will be officially listed on the MSF Level 2 Registry, with Hooked On Driving Northeast Track Days as the certifying body. This nationally recognized credential allows you to instruct at events hosted by many HPDE clubs, organizations, and tracks across the U.S. that accept MSF Level 2 certification. We will verify your status upon request from other Chief Instructors.
  2. Unsuccessful Completion If you do not meet the passing standards (e.g., issues with in-car instruction, safety awareness, teaching ability, etc.), you will not earn certification or registry listing. There is no permanent penalty—you are encouraged to retake the class later (at no cost) after gaining more experience or addressing identified gaps. This is standard for rigorous hands-on programs like MSF Level 2.
  3. HOD Provisional Coach Status (conditional/middle-ground outcome) You meet the core requirements to pass the class, but the evaluating mentors determine you need additional real-world seasoning before receiving full national endorsement.
    • Benefits: You may coach/instruct at Hooked On Driving Northeast Track Days events as a regular coach under supervision, with the same registration pricing and benefits as other coaches.
    • Limitations: No national MSF Level 2 endorsement or registry listing at this stage. Other clubs/organizations will not recognize your status through the MSF registry. We will verify your status to inquiring Chief Instructors as: “Candidate has not passed our course.”
    • Next steps: Coach at the required number of HOD events to build skills and consistency. Once we observe strong, confident performance, we will upgrade you to full MSF2 certification and sign off with the Motorsport Safety Foundation.

This provisional path allows promising candidates to gain valuable hands-on mentoring experience while upholding high standards for national-level certification.
